Why coastal environments are so corrosive

Coastal regions are among the most damaging environments for metal infrastructure. Salt spray carried by constant onshore winds means structures are under near-continuous exposure to corrosive chlorides.

In addition to chloride attack, structures must contend with high humidity, temperature fluctuations and intense UV exposure. All these factors degrade coatings and accelerate corrosion.

Infrastructure affected by coastal corrosion

Metal infrastructure of all kinds is susceptible to coastal corrosion – and in some cases, so is concrete.

Bridges, walkways and their railings are typically metal and will corrode without adequate protection.

Coating systems for coastal protection

Under ISO 9223, atmospheric corrosivity is classified from C1 (very low) to CX (extreme). High-salinity coastal environments typically fall into category C5 (very high) for onshore structures, or CX for offshore applications.

These classifications help specifiers select the appropriate coating type and application method for the level of corrosion protection required.

For coastal applications, the main coating systems used are:

  • Epoxy coatings – excellent adhesion and chemical resistance, widely used as a primary barrier coat
  • Polyurethane coatings – high UV resistance and flexibility, commonly used as a topcoat
  • Marine-grade coatings – formulated specifically for salt-water exposure, used on offshore platforms, ships and harbour structures
  • Multi-layer systems – combine a zinc-rich primer with epoxy and polyurethane layers for maximum durability
  • Zinc primers – these work by forming a sacrificial layer that cathodically protects the metal underneath, even if the coating is scratched or damaged.

Application challenges

A coating is only as effective as its application. If corrosion begins beneath the coating due to improper preparation or application, it will spread unseen – undermining the coating from within.

Surface preparation in a coastal environment presents particular challenges. Abrasive blasting or solvent cleaning creates the uniform surface texture needed for good adhesion. Once prepared, however, the surface must be coated without delay. Any exposure to salt air can contaminate it before the coating is applied.

Even coverage is critical. Edges are especially vulnerable and require particular care to ensure a sufficiently thick finish that prevents salt air from reaching the metal.

Humidity fluctuations during application can also compromise adhesion and film formation, so timing is important. Wherever possible, application should be carried out in a controlled environment.
