Protective Coatings for Agricultural Equipment: A Practical Guide

Protective Coatings for Agricultural Equipment: A Practical Guide

Agricultural equipment takes a beating – abrasion, moisture, chemicals, UV radiation, dust and impact are daily realities. The right protective coating system, correctly applied, is one of the most cost-effective investments you can make to extend equipment life and keep operations running.

Why coatings matter

Quality protective coatings form a tough barrier over steel, fibreglass, plastic and composite materials, resisting corrosion, chemical attack, chipping and surface degradation.

Modern formulations require minimal surface pre-treatment and cure quickly – minimising downtime.

Farming in South Africa’s conditions adds another layer of urgency. Harsh UV exposure, extreme temperature swings, fertilisers, pesticides and abrasive soils accelerate deterioration in unprotected equipment. Coatings are the practical, proven answer.

Choosing the right coating for agricultural uses

Not all coatings are equal – and choosing the wrong type wastes money. Here’s what each is best suited for:

Epoxy coatings

Chemical- and abrasion-resistant, waterproof and easy to clean. Ideal for lining steel tanks and grain silos, protecting pipes and agricultural structures against corrosion, and coating concrete floors in wineries, dairies and food-production areas. A spray system delivers the best finish.

Dry film thickness: 75–250 microns | Cure: Air dry; full hardness up to 7 days

Powder coatings

A single-application, high-gloss top coat with excellent corrosion resistance. Best for compact equipment, machine components, tools and accessories – provided they can withstand baking temperatures of up to 240°C.

Dry film thickness: 50–150 microns | Cure: Baked at up to 240°C for 30+ minutes

Polyurethane coatings

The premium choice for heavy-duty agricultural assets – tractors, combine harvesters, sprayers, ploughs and steel storage infrastructure. Highly durable, chip-resistant and available in low-VOC formulations. Bonds well to metal, aluminium and plastic.

Dry film thickness: 100–125 microns | Cure: 48 hours initial; full cure up to 7 days

Zinc primers

The go-to anticorrosive undercoat for metal surfaces exposed to wet, humid or harsh conditions – fencing, machinery, underground tanks and submerged pipelines. Applied to clean, sandblasted metal.

Dry film thickness: 60–100 microns | Cure: 16 hours (humidity dependent)

Application: getting it right

Even the best coating will underperform if applied incorrectly. Three factors make the difference:

Surface preparation

Clean, degreased, sanded and dry surfaces are non-negotiable for proper adhesion. Heavily corroded surfaces need sandblasting first.

Film thickness

Applying at the correct thickness (see ranges above) determines coverage quality and longevity. Too thin means inadequate protection; too thick can affect cure and adhesion.

Spray equipment

For complex shapes, fluid-applied coatings via spray systems ensure complete, uniform coverage. The choice between air-atomising, airless and air-assisted airless systems affects output rate, overspray and finish quality – and should be matched to the coating type and job scale.

Talk to an expert

Selecting the right coating for your equipment and environment is a technical decision. We recommend speaking to coating suppliers for expert advice.

The same goes for choosing the spray equipment to apply coatings correctly. Pump performance, nozzle size and system type (air-atomising, airless or air-assisted airless) all affect coverage quality, output rate and finish – and the wrong setup can waste both time and product.

SCT supplies professional spray equipment suited to the full range of agricultural protective coatings and can advise on the right system for your application — whether you’re coating a single tractor or an entire fleet of machinery and structures.
