What to consider when choosing spray equipment for furniture
The best spray gun or system for painting or staining furniture (and other wooden items) will depend on a number of factors:
- the scale of required spraying work
A manual high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) paint or stain sprayer is ideal for small to medium spraying projects, such as on-site cabinet painting or coating comparatively small runs of furniture.A compressed air sprayer can be used. However, an HVLP model typically achieves smoother finishes with less overspray (and less wasted product).
For larger-volume or industrial coating of furniture or furniture components, an airless system offers higher efficiency.
For furniture spraying and wood finishing in workshop settings, our top recommendation is for an air-assisted airless sprayer. This achieves the highest-quality, most consistent finishes.
- the viscosity of the product(s) you want to spray
Some spray guns and machines (especially compressed air sprayers) can spray only low- to medium-viscosity products, and may require that you thin paint before spraying it.Other units support multiple different air caps and nozzles, and can handle materials with low through to high viscosities.
- the size and nature of your work environment
Your work environment will help dictate how bulky spray equipment can be; whether it must be portable; what hose length is ideal; what power sources are available; and what tolerance there is for noise (for example, due to operation of a compressor in the case of a pneumatic/compressed air spray unit). - operator experience
For beginners, traditional air sprayers offer the simplest operation (and the lowest prices). However, it’s common to graduate to an airless air sprayer, to achieve faster painting and staining. This type of sprayer requires a little more know-how but isn’t very complex to learn.
- your budget
Budget is an obvious deciding factor. The only caveat is to get expert advice if you need it, to avoid wasting money on a unit that isn’t a good match to your requirements.
